Frequently Asked Questions

We are often asked:

How do we identify "underprivileged" kids?

Our band and orchestra teachers know their students and are aware of the needs of the families.  They contact us and inform us of deserving students.

Where do we get instruments?:

We have to purchase most of our instruments, only a few have been donated.  We purchase them from pawn shops and marketplace.  This is one reason why we need your donation.

How do we refurbish used instruments?

We are in partnership with McHugh Violin Shop, Midwest Drum, and are currently looking for someone to partner with us to repair other instruments.  Partners are wonderful to work with us, but we always pay them their fees.  Another reason why donations are appreciated.

Our Story

I love to tell the story of how Fanfare Instruments for Students began.  I bought a violin for a friend who needed one for her stepson.  It cost me $30 and needed a lot of work.  Simon McHugh of McHugh Violin Shop here in Wichita, evaluated the violin and said restoration would cost about $300.  The bow, in its present condition was worth about $400-$450, fully restored the value would be about $1000.00.  I thought I could sell him the bow, so that he could make some money, then pay him the $300 to restore the violin, and find a bow and case.  My friend found another violin for her stepson, so Jim and I were the proud owners of a dilapidated violin.  I went into the violin shop to see what could be done.  I explained to Simon that Jim and I had donate 3 instruments that belonged to our children, and 2 of mine to schools and friends who needed them.  We just wanted to be able to donate this violin to a child whose parents were unable to provide one. As he was typing the check for $450 he said he would restore the violin, find a bow and case at no charge to us.  As I held that check in my hands I said that I would do something good with that money.  And so it was that Fanfare Instruments for Students was created.
